The fires in California got me thinking about those brave men and women and the risks the unimaginable risks they go through to protect life and property; I know because for a year I volunteered with my local fire department, and thinking of volunteering again.

To these brave heroes, thank you.

Whatever the American’s are proud of - whatever they consider to be particularly good, useful, brilliant, or characteristic of themselves or their climate, they designate, half in jest, though scarcely half in earnest, as an “institution.” Thus the memory of George Washington… is an institution; the Falls of Niagara are an institution; the Plymouth Rock, on which the Pilgrim Fathers first set foot, is an institution…; “Sweet potatoes” are an institution, and Pumpkin (or Punkin) pie is an institution; …squash is an institution; Bunker Hill is an institution; and the firemen of New York are a great institution. ~Charles Mackay, Life and Liberty in America, 1850

I’m always amazed with the people who run into burning buildings while everyone else is running out of them. I have a friend who is a firefighter and I’m always telling him he’s the best! And he is. :)

Firefighters definitely deserve our thanks and support. I do not take it lightly just how dangerous their jobs are. These men and women put their lives on the line every time they respond to a fire, and that’s no small feat.

This is a very considerate note of thanks. :D

Thanks for the reminder about ordinary people that do extraordinary acts every day.
